Kids send Marcus the lamb to slaughter

LONDON (Reuters) – A group of schoolchildren who reared a lamb from birth and named it Marcus has overridden objections by parents and rights activists and voted to send the animal to slaughter.

Marcus the six-month-old lamb has now been culled, the head teacher of the primary school in Kent confirmed on Monday, after the school's council -- a 14-member group of children aged 6 to 11 -- voted 13-1 to have him killed.

The decision has provoked fury among animal-loving celebrities, animal and human rights campaigners and the parents of some of the children, and led to threats against Lydd primary school and its teachers, according to a member of staff.

Around 250 children at the school take part in a program designed to teach them about rearing and breeding animals.

The educational farm was started this year, with Marcus being hand-fed by the children. The children also look after ducks, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs.

The intention had been to buy pigs with the money raised from slaughtering Marcus, but those plans have been put on hold following the furor created by the lamb's culling. The school said the program may now have to be stopped.

"It's all up in the air," said a member of staff. "There's been so much pressure on us as a result of all this."

Despite that, the school said there had been overwhelming support among the children, the staff and most of the parents to have Marcus -- a castrated male who could not have been used for breeding -- sent to the slaughterhouse.

But opponents branded it heartless and cruel, with animal rights campaigners asking why Marcus could not have been used to teach the children about wool, and human rights campaigners worried about the emotional impact of Marcus's death on the children.
A popular talkshow host offered to buy the lamb and give it sanctuary and Facebook groups sprung up to rally support to keep Marcus alive. But the children had the final say. The school defended the children's decision, calling it educational.

"When we started the farm in spring 2009, the aim was to educate the children in all aspects of farming life and everything that implies," the school said in a statement.

"The children have had a range of opportunities to discuss this issue, both in terms of the food cycle and the ethical aspect... It is important for everyone to move on from this issue, so the children can focus on their education."

Body Worlds plans cadaver show dedicated to sex

ZURICH (Reuters) – German anatomists plan a new show dedicated solely to dead bodies having sex as part of the Body Worlds exhibitions.

Gunther von Hagens and his wife Angelina Whalley show corpses prepared using a technique invented by von Hagens called "plastination," that removes water from specimens and preserves them with silicon rubber or epoxy resin.

"It's not my intention to show certain sexual poses. My goal is really to show the anatomy and the function," Body Worlds creative director Whalley told Reuters in an interview, adding the sex exhibition may open next year.

Body Worlds exhibitions, visited by 27 million people across the world, have been criticized for presenting entire corpses, stripped of skin to reveal the muscles and organs underneath, in lifelike and often theatrical positions.

Von Hagens has already triggered uproar with a new exhibit which shows just two copulating corpses.

German politicians called the current "Cycle of Life" show charting conception to old age "revolting" and "unacceptable" when it showed in Berlin earlier this year because it included copulating cadavers.

The way a plastinate is exhibited can vary from country to country to reflect local sensibilities. A vote of local employees decided that one of the copulating female cadavers should wear fewer clothes in Zurich than was the case in Berlin.

"Switzerland is the first country that already said from the outset that we could show whatever we wanted," said von Hagens.

"Zurich is ready ... but it's maybe not so easy in every other town," he said. "We have discussed whether it is proper to show homosexuality and in what way. This is a very delicate subject."
Von Hagens and Whalley said they both intended to donate their bodies for plastination, but would not leave instructions about how to display them, dismissing this as vanity.

"I find it a great opportunity to give something to others by donating my body, namely self-awareness," said Whalley.

Von Hagens said he and some other body donors even saw plastination as an alternative to burial or cremation, giving them more certainty about would happen to their bodies after death.
"Cremation for me is hell," he said.

FOX LAKE, Ill. – A northern Illinois teacher faces felony charges after allegedly giving two teenage girls marijuana, alcohol and prescription drugs in exchange for work around her home. Kym Krocza was arrested Tuesday on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She is free on bond.

Lake County authorities said the girls attend Grant High School in Fox Lake, where the 41-year-old Krocza teaches algebra and calculus. She's been suspended from the school.

Police said Krocza met the girls in her neighborhood before they started attending Grant High and approached them about helping her with laundry and cleaning.

In exchange, she allegedly gave them pot, alcohol and Zoloft, an antidepressant.

A message left at Krocza's home wasn't immediately returned Wednesday.

My mom called me today. We hadn't talked in about a week or more, so I wasn't entirely surprised that she was calling.

When I picked up the phone, the first thing she said was, "Have you heard the latest about Craig*?"

I probably pass through my hometown equally or even more times than I actually stop and stay and shoot the breeze with people. I can barely keep up with what is going on in my own family, so suffice it to say, I don't keep up with anything that is going on in the 'Black Community' at home.

Of course this fact is lost on my mom.

"No," I said. I couldn't imagine what could be going on.

Craig is a long time friend of my family. When he was a teenager, about 15 or so years ago, he used to come to my grandma's house just about every evening and spend time with her. He was also the head of the Usher's Ministry at the church I spent many of my formative years in.

He had convinced my Grandma, who was in her 70s, to become an usher at the church. Grandma served faithfully as an usher until she died of lung cancer in 1997. Craig asked if she could be buried with her usher's pin. My family did him one better and buried her in her best white and purple usher's uniform.

Craig has pretty much been family since that time. He had always been as straight as an arrow, so I couldn't imagine what was going on with him.

"What's going on?," I asked.

"Craig cheated on his wife...with another man," my mom said.

"What?," I said. Maybe Craig wasn't as straight as an arrow.

Craig isthe kind of guy that had a lot of 'stereotypical' traits. He dresses well. Likes shoes. Plays the piano. Fairly effeminate. But then again, there are plenty of straight guys who have these qualities. I know a few. I know several gay guys who do not have those traits.

I think that pretty much everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt, especially after he got married and had a kid.

"Are you sitting down?," Mom asked.

I couldn't imagine what more she could add that would be any more of a shock.

"He also messed around with Robbie," she said.

"WHAT!!!WHAT????????YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!," came my flabbergasted reply.

Robbie is about 4 years older than me. He lived down the street from my grandma. During the summer, he would come to my grandma's house and hang out with my cousin and I. Robbie was very popular with the girls. He was a basketball star when he was in high school. He is one of the last people I would think would be gay. He seemed to like girls too much.

So yeah, that in and of itself was quite shocking. But here's the kicker. Craig and Robbie are FIRST COUSINS! That's right, blood relatives.

"I refuse this," I said.

"It's true."

After I got off the phone with my mom, I immediately called my older sister who lives in another state. She almost died when I told her everything. We didn't have all of the wherefore and why, so we got on a conference call with my cousin.

My cousin told us that apparently Craig had made a list of every man he had cheated on his wife with. Apparently he had cheated on her with her brother.

And him and Robbie weren't just a one time thing. They had been together several times; as recently as the 4th of July.

Another facet to this sad tale is that Robbie also molested Craigs sister when she was a kid. Robbie and that little sister have 'hooked up' (meaning sex was involved) several times since. I believe that she graduated high school in 2008, so their hooking up had to have taken place while she was a teenager.

This mess is beyond Jerry Springer. If Satan had his own talk show, that family would be his first guests.

This is beyond crazy. I'm shakin' my head.

Man accused of trading dad's car for $50 in crack

FRESNO, Calif. – Authorities arrested a man they said tried to trade his father's car for $50 worth of crack cocaine. Deputies arrested the 39-year-old man around 4 a.m. Wednesday after his 74-year-old father reported that his Lincoln had been stolen. When deputies arrived at the father's home, they saw the son walking up the street. They determined that the car had been sold for drugs.

Deputies later saw someone else driving the Lincoln, and pulled it over. The driver fled the moving car, which hit two parked cars.

Deputies caught the driver, who was arrested on suspicion of evading an officer and resisting arrest.

The son was arrested on suspicion of car theft.

Authorities did not released the names of those involved.

NY dad told soldier-son killed in war — he wasn't

BUFFALO, N.Y. – An Army unit is reviewing how it delivers information to families after a call to a western New York couple led them to believe their son had been killed in combat.
Ray Jasper of Niagara Falls said he, his wife, Robin, and their extended family spent four hours Sunday mourning their son, Sgt. Jesse Jasper, before learning from his girlfriend that he was alive.

The 26-year-old soldier called his father from Afghanistan to prove it after hearing about the mix-up.

"Dad what's going on?" Jesse Jasper asked.

"I said, 'Oh my God you're alive, I love you, I love you, I love you, you're alive,'" Ray Jasper, 49, said Tuesday.

An Army spokesman with Jasper's unit said officials may revise the written scripts used by volunteer liaisons to inform all families of any deaths within the unit to avoid similar misunderstandings in the future.

The nightmare started about 2 p.m. Sunday when Ray Jasper, while on a family camping trip, got an urgent message from a family liaison from his son's unit in the 82nd Airborne Division, based in Fort Bragg, N.C. When he reached the liaison — the wife of a soldier deployed with Jasper's son — she told him she had a "red line message" that she needed to read to him verbatim.

"She said, 'I'm sorry to inform you that on Sept. 12, that Sgt. Judin and Sgt. Jesse Jasper were killed in Afghanistan,'" Ray Jasper recounted.

"My wife was talking to me at the time and I said, 'say that again,' and she said the same thing over again. I couldn't do any more. I hit the floor," he said.

Jasper knew the military's policy is to notify families in person when a soldier has been killed, but after being away all weekend, he thought someone might have called after finding no one home.

The Jaspers were given a number to call for details but decided they would not dial it until after making the 60-mile trip home from the Ellicottville campground and assembling other family members. As family and friends gathered, others posted condolence messages on Facebook.
Jasper's girlfriend in North Carolina saw the postings and called the Jaspers.

"She was screaming to me, 'He's not dead! He's not dead!'" Jasper said. "I said, 'How do you know this?' She said, 'I just got off the phone with him.'

Their son called soon after.

A spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division said Jasper's unit, through its family readiness group, notifies all families of deaths within the unit to prevent undue worry and misinformation. Maj. Brian Fickel said callers are instructed to read from a written script to prevent misinterpretation.

In this case, families were being notified of the death of Sgt. Tyler Judin, a 23-year-old from Winfield, Kan.

Fickel said the script used Sunday began: "Sgt. Tyler A. Judin ... was killed in action while conducting combat operations in support of bravo troop 473 cav." It went on to say Judin's family had been notified and services would be scheduled.

"I can't speculate on how it was transmitted or how it was received," Fickel said, "but during that process the results speak for themselves. The family believed their son was killed."
The family liaison said she was not able to read the complete message before the call to the Jaspers was terminated, according to Fickel.

"I don't know why they would tell us about someone else's tragedy," said Ray Jasper.
Fickel said the unit is considering starting the scripts with "your son or daughter is fine." Internal jargon like "red line message" will probably go, he said.

Woman arrested on child cruelty charge

An Alabama woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say she injured a child while dragging it through a store in Rome.

According to Floyd County Jail records:
Melissa Catherine Smith-Means, 37, of Gaylesville, Ala., was arrested by Rome police around 12:30 p.m. She was charged with felony first-degree cruelty to children.

Police say she was observed by customers and employees at a store on Broad Street, dragging a small child around by a backpack leash. The child had visible marks on the neck from the incident.

She remains in jail without bail.

I should give the one on the right a pass, but I'm not in the mood. 1) Eyeliner used as lip liner with a reddish colored lipstick is PLAYED OUT. Now there are still people who successfully rock this look (more power to 'em), but SHE is definately NOT one of them. 2) She needs to do something different in the hair region. That style doesn't really fit her face the way that it should

I realize that I should probably have sympathy for the one on the left, considering that she is willing to be seen in a formal setting with Ms. Wildabeast. That's true friendship right there.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to blast ugly people here. But I have a huge problem wiht people that aren't that attractive (within certain contexts) trying hard to pull off stuff that they have no earthy business tryna do.

I beleive that anyone can look attractive (look at what they did for Susan Boyle), but it has to be done correctly. I believe that these women could be very elegant, even stunning, with the right make up and wardrobe.

However, overplucked eyebrows and ghetto lipliner do not accomplish this. Chile please.

Police: Man Beats Woman At Cracker Barrel
Stranger Beat Morrow Mom, Called Her Racial Slurs

MORROW, Ga. -- Morrow police say surveillance video and witnesses caught a man beating a mother who is also a soldier and calling her racial slurs.
Tasha Hill, a United States Army soldier, and her 7-year-old daughter Shiyenn both have a hard time talking about what happened to them at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant on Southlake Plaza Drive in Morrow.

"I was thinking that it was my fault and that I shouldn’t have picked to go over there," said Shiyenn.

Hill said they stopped at Cracker Barrel because her daughter wanted to eat there. When they were walking inside the restaurant, a big man police identified as Troy Dale West of Poulan, Ga., forced the door open and almost hit Shiyenn.

Hill said the 6'2", 215 lb. man started punching and kicking her because she said excuse me and because she is black.

"[I said] 'Excuse me sir watch out you almost hit my daughter in the face.' He just came lighting fast came back at me with, 'You need to watch your f-n daughter,'" said Hill.

Hill said that's what West said before his fists started pounding her.

"He continued to punch and kick on me and called me vulgar names, called me a racial slur and then curse words," said Hill.

Morrow Police Commander Jimmy Callaway said the restaurant's surveillance video clearly shows West beating Hill in the restaurant's small entryway.

"It’s clearly a shocking incident to where a man that’s twice the size of this female beats her down in front of the child," said Callaway.

Hill said her daughter seeing that hurts her more than the bruises and racial slurs.

"That just really bothered me for her to see that. I want justice served I don’t want him to ever do this to anybody else," said Hill.

Police charged West with cruelty to children, battery and disorderly conduct. He is out of jail on bond.

Morrow Police would not release surveillance video of the incident because they have referred this case to the FBI to investigate it as a hate crime.

This actually happened over the 4th of July weekend, but I'm just getting around to posting it.

After my husband and I came home from church, the power was out in our house. There was a squirrel that had stepped on the wrong powerline and was zapped, causing our power to go out.

When the City Utilities representative came out to see what happened, he and my husband discovered that the windshield on my husband's car was shattered.

In the second picture you can see a cardboard tube between the windshield wipers. Therein lies the remains of a firework. The concussion of the blast caused the windshield to shatter.

It is illegal in my city to shoot fireworks, but many people in my neighborhood were. The police rarely respond to complaints concerning fireworks on the holiday weekend.

So to sum it up, someone else's buffoonery cost me almost $200. Not as much as it could have cost, but any amount of money is too much when you have to pay it out of your pocket.

Last February, former President Clinton spoke at one of the high schools where I live. My husband and I just barely missed getting in to see him.

While we were in line, I saw this dude holding his sign. I had to look at it several times, because I did not expect someone to be holding up a derogatory sign as explicit as I thought that this sign was. Especially where I live.

I asked people around me what they thought it said. We all agreed.

I feel like there is something that I have not picked up on. I keep finding these pictures of women booty tootin, pole dancing, etc. with their kids right there beside them. Its one thing to engage in this bufoonery alone, but it takes it to a different level when you drag your kid into it.

It makes me mad that it appears that she has made very little effort to keep her son out of the picture. I also have a problem with the fact that her son is right ere and that her behind is practically on his arm.

That little boy is going to gro up with no concept of how to treat women.

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.

Kids at Creative Steps Day Camp were thrilled to go swimming once a week at the Valley Swim Club. But after only one trip to the private club, they were...

"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'" said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers' first visit to the pool suggested otherwise. "When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool," Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email.

"The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately."

The next day the club told the camp director that the camp's membership was being suspended and their money would be refunded.

"I said, 'The parents don't want the refund. They want a place for their children to swim,'" camp director Aetha Wright said.

Campers remain unsure why they're no longer welcome.

"They just kicked us out. And we were about to go. Had our swim things and everything," said camper Simer Burwell.

The explanation they got was either dishearteningly honest or poorly worded.

"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club," John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.

While the parents await an apology, the camp is scrambling to find a new place for the kids to beat the summer heat.

Today the world mourned the passing of the King of Pop. His memorial service was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

There were many touching tributes to the legend who passed before his time. Most notably, John Mayer played "Human Nature" on his guitar accompanied by Michael Jackson's band and back-up singers. Jennifer Hudson sang a stirring version of "Will You Be There." Both Usher and Jermaine Jackson were almost overcome with emotion during their respective performances (Usher performed "Gone Too Soon" and Jermaine performed "Smile").

Only time will tell what Michael Jackson's legacy will be, and how today's memorial will play into it.

However, in the midst of this tragedy, someone still manages to do something that leaves me shakin' my head.

Is this foo serious? "I can't bring a child into a wold that doesn't have Michael Jackson?" Are you kidding me? What is wrong with people?

I understand that she could be taking the loss of Michael Jackson hard. Many are. But this is trife. There is validity to what she's feeling. People actually do mourn the loss of celebrities.

But why is she posting this on the internet for God and everyone to see. It just makes her sound crazy. I mean really...have an abortion because you can't handle the death of Michael Jackson. Chile please.

And why do I get the vibe that she is using MJ's death to exploit the fact that she doesn't think that she's ready to have a kid.

Unless you've been living under a rock, by now you've probably heard that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop died yesterday at UCLA Hospital following a cardiac arrest episode.

This is a great loss to music (I'm hard pressed to find any chart-topping artist that hasn't been influenced by him in some way), and a great loss for Generation X, and those of us in the Millennial Generation that are old enough to remember him before all of his legal woes.

This is also a great loss for me because I grew up listening to his music and imitating his dance moves. My mom and aunts were Jackson 5 fans, and I have an older sister (12 years older than me) who is a GenXer that came of age when Jackson rose to megastardom. Anything that Michael Jackson was doing in terms of televised performances or music video premieres automatically captured the attention of all three generations of my family (my grandma LOVED Michael).

I debated on whether to put up a tribute on this blog for several reasons, all of which wax insignificant as I write this.

So here it is.

This is from a concert that he did in Bucharest in 1992. I watched this concert when it was first televised (and I know that I have a tape of it somewhere).

Man in the Mirror is pretty much my favorite song by Michael Jackson, but the level of foolery in this video is worth noting.

My mom, sister, brother-in-law, and I were DEAD at the guy in the wheelchair at 3:02.

Fools had been fainting the entire concert. When someone would faint, they would be crowd surfed to the front. This had been going on pretty much the whole concert but it reached a frenzied peak during Man in the Mirror (which I believe was the last song).
